Hoodia

Hoodia (pronounced /ˈhʊdiːə/) is a genus of 13 species in the flowering plant family Apocynaceae, under the subfamily Asclepiadoideae. They are stem succulents, described as "cactiform" because of their remarkable similarity to the unrelated cactus family. They can reach up to 1m high and have large flowers, often with tan colour and strong smell.
Many Hoodia species are protected plants, typical of the Namib Desert, ranging from Central Namibia to southern Angola, especially in plains and rocky areas. Common names include "Bushman's Hat" and "Queen of the Namib".
Several species are grown as garden plants, and one species, Hoodia gordonii, is being investigated for use as an appetite suppressant. "In the last few years, hoodia has been heavily marketed for weight loss and has become immensely popular."
On January 18, 2008, the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (representing botanic gardens in 120 countries) stated that "400 medicinal plants are at risk of extinction, from over-collection and deforestation, threatening the discovery of future cures for disease." These included Yew trees (the bark was used for cancer drugs, paclitaxel, although current licensed syntheses do not); Hoodia (from Namibia, source of weight loss drugs); half of Magnolias (used as Chinese medicine for 5,000 years to fight cancer, dementia and heart disease); and Autumn crocus (for gout). The group was said to have found that five billion people rely upon traditional plant-based medicine for health care.
Hoodia is currently listed in Appendix II to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which includes species not currently considered endangered but are at risk if trade is not controlled.

New weight loss drug aims at fat loss - not muscle loss

One of the primary problems of losing weight is the fact that all weight is not created equal.  When you lose weight you will inevitably lose muscle mass as well.  What if there was a way to tell you body to burn only fat?

Researchers at the Garvin Institute in Sydney, Australia, say they've created a new weight loss drug to do just that. 

In mice, the drug has shown to be an effective tool in changing the signals to the brain that determine what fuel the body is to use for energy.  By stopping certain signals, the body turns to fatty acids rather than protein.  The result? The mice lost body weight while maintaining muscle mass.

This is the opposite of the way traditional weight loss drugs work.  They work to alter the way the brain sends signals to the body in an effort to suppress appetite.

From ABC News, the head of the neuroscience program at the Garvan Institute, Professor Herbert Herzog, says these therapies tend to be ineffective.

"What we've found is that blocking one system that influences appetite and body weight regulation might not be enough to cause a significant change in reducing body weight," he said.

"If you take one signal away, others take over."

The new drug is not being developed for the extremely, or morbidly, obese but, rather, for those that are moderately overweight.  The research suggests that this drug, in conjunction with a normal diet, will yield moderate fat loss and minimal muscle loss.

While the preliminary results are exciting, the drug is still about three years away from human clinical trials.

'American Idol' alum Mandisa Hundley shows off her 80-pound weight loss

Mandisa Hundley didn't let weight issues stop her from auditioning for the fifth season of "American Idol." But the singer's joy from making it onto the show soon vanished when sharp-tongued judge Simon Cowell joked that they would need a "bigger stage" to accommodate her.

Now 80 pounds thinner, Hundley tells ETonline.com what it was like to relive the painful memory that was recently replayed on "American Idol Rewind."

"My favorite memory started out as my least favorite memory and that was when Simon Cowell made fun of my weight on the very first show," she said. "That was my worst nightmare come true. When I saw Simon the next time, I told him I forgave him because an important part of my faith is forgiving others because I have been forgiven. I will never forget that reaction: the look on his face - humbled and giving me a big hug."

Though Hundley, 33, didn't go on to win the singing competition, she returned to the recording studio. She says her newest album, called "True Beauty," is about not being defined by the way one looks.

However for Hundley, the way she looked needed a change.

"When I was recording that album, I started to do the work necessary to be set free: changing my eating habits. No particular diet, just eating healthy," she said. "I started working with a personal trainer and a counselor who specializes in eating disorders. I have lost 80 pounds since I started recording."

Among the many changes Hundley had to make in her life, the singer says she cut out tempting Krispy Kreme doughnuts and worked with a personal trainer who makes her do cardio, weight training and a Latin form of dancing called Zumba.

"I don't believe in diets, because I have lost weight on them all, but the thing about diets is that you have the mindset that you stop a diet when you are done losing weight," she said. "This really is a lifestyle change for me."
